The Short Answer: Rats Are Unlikely to Be a Primary Source of COVID-19

The evidence is clear that SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) spreads efficiently from human to human. While coronaviruses can jump between species and some animals can be infected, the dominant route of transmission has been people to people. Early in the pandemic, multiple animal-origin hypotheses were explored; however, a single, definitive animal source for SARS-CoV-2 has not been confirmed.

Because SARS-CoV-2 can infect a number of species, researchers have also examined whether variants might have evolved in animal hosts. Those ideas remain under investigation and should be treated as hypotheses rather than conclusions.

Bottom line: it’s prudent to avoid contact with wild rodents of any kind. Even setting COVID-19 aside, rats and mice carry pathogens that can impact human health and should be excluded from homes and workplaces.

The Longer Answer: Rats Can Carry Other Coronaviruses

Several rodent coronaviruses are known in the scientific literature (often grouped as “rat coronaviruses”). These are distinct from SARS-CoV-2 but serve as a reminder that rodents can host contagious viruses. Regardless of the specific virus, preventing rodent infestations reduces disease risk.
As for the origin of SARS-CoV-2, reputable sources have noted that the precise zoonotic pathway is unresolved. Bats, other wildlife, and intermediary hosts have been discussed, but no single animal source has been definitively proven. Treat any specific-animal claims with caution unless supported by current, peer-reviewed research.

With or without COVID-19, rodents can transmit a range of pathogens. Keeping your property rodent-free is an important, everyday health measure.

Other Diseases Carried by Mice & Rats

The U.S. CDC documents multiple rodent-associated diseases. Below are examples that matter for North America and beyond:

1. Plague
Caused by Yersinia pestis, historically spread by fleas from infected rodents. Today it persists at low levels in parts of the western U.S.; prompt antibiotics are effective.

2. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
Associated with deer mice, cotton rats, and white-footed mice in the Americas. Risk comes from breathing in aerosolized particles from urine/droppings in enclosed spaces.

3. Leptospirosis
Bacteria shed in the urine of infected animals (including rodents) can contaminate water, soil, or food; illness ranges from mild to severe.

4. Salmonellosis
Food or water contaminated by rodent feces can cause diarrheal disease.

5. Tularemia
A potentially serious bacterial infection acquired via ticks/deer flies, direct contact with infected animals, or contaminated materials.

6. LCMV (Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus)
Carried by some house mice; transmission can occur via contact with urine, droppings, saliva, or nesting materials.

The most effective protection is prevention:
